Hi all, Was wondering if any one would know the rules for detecting in a public park? There are a few well groomed old parks here in the Annapolis Valley that I wanted to check out, but don't want to piss of the town or the locals.
Thanks

Hi Tony, as explained to me by the police in Mississauga; 1) make sure it is public property, not private, or you can be charged with trespass. 2) always fill in your holes or you can be charged with destruction of public property. 3) remove all garbage (or items) that you dig up or you can be charged with littering. 4) never cut or chop tree roots, destruction... 5) make sure you press your plug back down hard. If it comes out and someone trips in the hole (thinking of playing fields here), you may be liable for injury.
Don't carry around a big knife.
Having said all that, it IS perfectly legal for you to be there. Public parks are for the public. You are Joe Q. Public. Exercise common sense and you should not have many problems. In 32 years of detecting, I've only once had to deal with an irritated woman. I apologized for disturbing her, left, and went back the next day. I've had to speak with the police on many occasions. They are always understandable, and usually curious. Public parks are a great place to find a heap of things. Look for slopes close to places where children play. Parents sit on the higher ground, watching their kids while good things fall out of their pockets! I hope this helps and encourages you to get out there.
yours, coinguy

Thanks coinguy, appreciate you taking the time to explain the rules of metal detecting in public parks. Just a bit of common sense should keep me out of trouble:-) going to look for those slopes on my next visit.
Cheers
