I guess it just depends on the particular field...some are good, some...not so good. Mostly on how much use they saw, and sometimes the ones with less use, few targets are actually are better, because of less modern junk. I wouldn't give up on ball fields because some don't produce a lot of finds. I think I'd actually prefer one that had less modern coinage in hopes of finding something a bit older A hard call, but always worth some effort.

I have tried both "newer" baseball fields and one abandoned one. The abandoned field shows promise BUT it is littered with years of pull tabs, beer cans , foil etc. I have pulled out some fairly old pennies there, but no silver yet. I am hoping as we (my father and I) patiently clean up the trash we will be rewarded. This may not be a fair comparison as the abandoned field was also used for a small exhibition of sorts, with rides etc. This is why it is so loaded with trash. As soon as the ground thaws the 5x8 coil is going to get a true test with this spot, it proved to be VERY tough to detect with the stock coil.
My experience (which is still little) so far with these fields has been frustrating with all the trash, I am not comfortable digging that much trash in a field that is still used. Lots of these fields are ran by fundraising efforts etc in rural areas so people tend to be very protective of them. Even being careful with plugs, still worries me on a playing field. I tend to focus on the "sure thing" targets. I don't want somebody seeing me digging 10 holes in a 2 foot span!
It's funny I have had great luck on soccer fields , but baseball fields seem more trashy to me.

That is very well said Leafs, to be mindfull of what others might think, because it is "others" that do get one "kicked off a property" It has happened I assure you. They leave a "brown spot 2 foot in daimeter" thinking they have "all the rights" just because they pay taxes. Fact is "taxes "also" pay to have these certain areas in pretine condition.

Do as less damages as possible , go early as you can , bring the trash back so you dont dig it back.
