Finally got out for the 1st time this year; brought along my daughter for good luck. With the grass being nice & flat after the winter snow, I figured I'd hit a field I did before. I didn't expect much as It was pretty quiet the last time I left. A few minutes after walking on the field I pulled out a NS large cent, which is a standard on an old site. I didn't have to go too far & pulled out a 1855 French 5 or 10 centime copper coin. Started doing some grids & came back with a 1861 NS half cent & a toasty colonial coin, which I won't be able to identify. In all I was quite happy with my finds; besides, the weather was sunny for a change. Decided to go for a backroad drive & found an old abandoned site with old cellars. Didn't do wonders for the amount of time I spent there, but I came back with an intact crucifix, which is a welcome addition to my relic collection. A great day overall. Take care guys & good luck on your hunts.

I'm situated in Cape Breton, so old coins are hard to come by on Acadian sites; as they were poor when they returned to NS. This was an old Scottish homestead. It comes to show, even though I thought the spot was cleaned up, I still pull out some coins, basically in the same area I detected before.
If you can find pre-deportation Acadian sites, you might finds some nice colonial coins. Here in my area, Acadians were never paid with actual money, they bought from a store & the purchases were written in a ledger. Therefore the economy was based on credits. No monies were exchanged.
The Acadians bought their goods at the company store, & sold their fish to the company for credits.
My finds are nothing to dance about, like most old coppers they are damaged; but at least I can identify 3 of the 4 coins. Silver is what a fellow wants, but they are as rare as dinosaur eggs.

Good hunt! I am hoping to hit up an "older" spot this week-end with my Dad. Doesn't mean I will find anything old but one can hope.
