Greetings everyone. My name is Randy and I'm new to the hobby. I live in the Cole Harbour area and I was just given a used Bounty Hunter 2200 from a colleague at work who wasn't using it. My young son had always wanted to go "treasure hunting". Luckily for me he's young enough he considers any junk to be treasure and gets a thrill out of even finding pennies. With that in mind I'm looking for suggestions of locations in the Dartmouth area what would be worth knocking around in. We've already gone through a few of the local out of the way parks and even the grounds of a closed/abandoned school and he's really enjoyed it but I'm just wondering what other sorts of areas we could check out. He just loves to get out and explore and I love spending time with him but we haven't lived here long enough to know the area well enough to even know where to explore.
Thanks.

Hey Randy
Nice to meet you, welcome to the forum! I grew up out in Cole Harbour, lots of history out that way. I've only been detecting for a few years but I quickly learned that asking for specific areas is not going to be that fruitful. Good spots are hard to find and even the most generous guy is unlikely to spill the beans! What you have to do is some research. There is good info on the web on the history of CH, read through it and look at some maps and nail down likely spots where people have been at one time. Easy spots to find are old roads, drive ways to nowhere, places where the terrain had been altered. I find farms to be difficult as farmers didn't seen to carry much money on them but have Lots of iron implements. Anyways, couple of thoughts for you. Check out the Cole Harbour historical society site and also the government of Canada Virtual Library pics of Cole Harbour, very interesting. Another possible lead is the rail road that crosses Bissett road. There were platforms in every village along the route including Cole Harbour and where there were people, there's buried stuff...
Cheers DS
