Not a fantastic find I know, but what it means is there is super old stuff in this area. This is by far my oldest IDable button so far, and has been confirmed as mid 17th C. The button looks like a tombac "nipple" (pimple as my research suggests) button, finds.org.uk/database/search/results/manufacture/1/institution/KENT/materialTerm/Pewter/objectType/BUTTON but the boys from England corrected me a little on composition, but the date range is still good. Only had a short time on this rather large site, and will be back soon, (after these rains) This is a link to another site with the pos. ID. and the whole story, and the buzz it created. www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/436924-tombac-pimple-button.html Good Luck Out There. Hope you all find something old. As the back side suggests this is not no ordinary tombac button, as they are typically lathe turned, this one is rough cast.

Hey Rick
Really nice finds, I'm not sure how you can say "Not Fantastic", you have some great history there, congrats!

Let me try to re-word it then. I do like it, it's the first of that type I've got, so for those reasons I do like it, but at the same time it's not military, and has no value. It is common, you can get bunches of them on Ebay UK for next to nothing. So in that sense it's not really special, but as I "did say" was what it represents, or suggests about the site where it came from is whole other story. Thinking about what else might be there, like a silver coin as old, keeps me awake at night.
In other words the age of the button does excite me. It's like a square nail in many ways, it suggests you can find early 1800's stuff, but the nail itself is not that exciting.
And make no mistake I'm happy with the find itself, but still remains it's just nothing much on it's own. EXAMPLE I was way happier about the 4th regiment of foot button I got awhile ago, even though it 140 years or so newer, as there are next to none examples anywhere, and it's military, so that to me IS special.

You have a good eye Rick! Looking at that, I would have said maybe a hundred years old max.
Nice finds BTW!
Cheers, DS
