Went back to where I got the 17th C nipple button a couple of weeks ago, knowing that it could, and hopeing that this place would give up a coin from that era. ZDD and me spent a solid 6 hours swinging there, and I got what I wanted, finally a positively IDable coin from the 1600's, and for a copper it is in really good shape, yes it is worn in places, but not corroded hardly at all. It gets harder to cross items off my top ten list each year, this is the second item I crossed off this year, and couldn't be happier about it. Anyway I also got a decent GEO II with a readable date 1744, the little sweet heart pin is cool, and the french marine button, (with the drilled shank)and the blow hole button are also very early finds. Def. a great hunt. The holed copper is roached. French Liard, copper, Young crowned portrait of Louis XIV, minted 1655-1658. Colonial French Marine Button, only the second ever of the drilled shank type for me. Sweetheart pin, military cool, but don't fit the time frame of the other finds from this site, but glad it popped out.

Awesome finds right there! A copper that old, and that much detail left. Congrats on crossing a hard item off your list! Nice buttons as well, great hunt Rick. A little envious right now.

Some very sweet finds you have there! Can't believe how nice that French coin is, the soil couldn't have been as acidic where it came out. Busted into the 1600's with a nice specimen Rick. That's gotta be my goal next year, a confirmed 1600's coin and some out of province stuff.
Cheers, DS

@ DS, I can't believe the condition either, as at least half the coppers I find are blank discs, and most of those would be 100 or more years newer. It's stated as being made of copper, but I wonder if it's actually more of a bronze, which does last much better ? Was just thinking how lucky I was not only to find it, but that it is still as good as it is.
Your right about the soil being a little different there too, as even the blow hole button which are very thin is in like-new condition. My buddy ZDD also got one of those, and his was in great condition too.
@ Leafs, thanks, it took a lot to cross that one off, 7 years, a lot of research, miles, and holes dug. A lot of those holes had junk in them.
@ Tony, Thanks. Although I am happy with this year as it stands right now, I'm hopeing it's not quite "wrapped up" yet. Don't forget you had a good year too, with oldest coin, and that '27 quarter.

Thanks Leslie, yep oldest for me so far, and frankly I don't expect to beat that date, but maybe a silver from the 1600's ? @ Retriever, Thanks, I cleaned up the pin I was surprised that it made 3 Q-tip black, bothe ends, you can clearly see all the letters of the latin moto now. That's sitting on a quarter for size reference.
