A very hot spot you pick to finish your season , will check that back next year , might be some more goodies out there.

It is a general issue button, non-regiment specific, they were in use from WWI to WW II. I have a co-worker who collects military button, will ask him tomorrow, if I find anything I will let you know. And yes, I'm going back to that spot next year, or next week if the weather is good ;-) |

Mmmmmmm... Silver... Those are some clean looking coins, did you clean them? Last time I threatened to Scotchbrite a fish scale, I thought CG was going to reach down the telephone wire and smack me around. Course I was just joking, I only use Ajax or Comet...
Nice take Tony, I'd be risking frostbite for finds like those!

Cheers, DS It's amazing what a bit of steel wool and a wire brush on your drill will do to clean silver coins  You are correct, I did clean them, just the tinfoil, baking soda and vinegar/salt dip. Also have a silver polishing cloth to add a bit of shine. Seems to work without damaging the coin, it is one of the few cleaning methods, so I'm told, that is safe to do. Probably would not try it on the more expensive coins, I think I spent more on gas to get to the site than what these coins are worth. Thoughts? Tony |

Yeah the wire wheels work ok, but nothing beats some nice steel wool and lots of elbow grease. Works wonders on all those Reales I'm finding.
Honestly, I had no idea you could clean silver with that crazy concoction. Seems to work pretty good. How's it work on silverware? That's one of my chores that I'm learning to dislike. ...

Cheers, DS They say it works like a charm, here is the recipe I posted a while back: Get a plastic bowl and line the bottom with aluminium foil, shiny side up; Add Salt 1 Tbsp of baking soda 1/2 cup boiling water 1/2 cup white vinegar. place coin in mixture, move it around, flip it etc, make sure all sides get exposure to foil. Let me know how it works on silverware Good luck |

That is a very good "wrap up hunt" there Tony. First off all jokes aside steel wool does have it's place. And the rest of the items you've used with the exception of the vinegar, are VERY good, and safe items to use. I've used those same ingredients with slightly different methods to go from pretty cruddy salt water silvers that looked like this (edit)  To silver that looks like this,,,and BTW I would use these methods on ANY coin, they are non abrasive, and obviously increased eye appeal many times.  I would avoid any silver "polish" at least on any coin that is above the coin dealers scrap bucket. anything collectible, silver polish leaves a residue that serious collectors can spot a mile away, and once it's there, it's there for good. Hoping for one more hunt myself, soon. Good luck out there. |
