My aim here is that most of you read this and my hope is that it helps some of you avoid going though what I have this summer.
.
Lyme disease is becoming more prevalent in Nova Scotia. The hobby we pursue exposes us to a greater risk of contracting this disease than most people. A few simple steps at the end of your outing can help save your life.
.
I'm not from Nova Scotia. Where I come from we don't have Lyme disease. I always thought a tick bite would look like this.
.
.
It doesn't. It looks like this.
.
.
This is what a Black Leg Tick looks like. They are very small and hard to see. You don't normally feel them on you and you don't feel them bite. You can only really find them with a visual check. YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR THEM!
.
Here are some of the things you can expect to go through if you don't find the tick and don't get diagnosed in time; Fever, joint pain, muscle pain, loss of feeling in your extremities, loss of motor control, loss of vision, paralysis in your face, labored breathing, and finally, death. if you're lucky.
Lyme disease attacks your nervous system. It slowly shuts down or affects one thing after another and is often diagnosed as something else. Or many something else's. That's what happened to me. I was finally diagnosed correctly after I lost all feeling in my face, feet and hands. I spent a week in the QE11 where I underwent the most gruesome tests known to man. If you think a spinal tap is unpleasant, (had one just for fun) try the nerve stress test. Crying is not an option. It's scary and it hurts. I now have a plastic tube running from my upper arm to my heart so the nice ladies from the VON can come to my house every evening and administer a potent antibiotic. I'll be taking pills for months before this is over.
.
Recovery takes weeks or even months. Not only am I unable to work, I am unable to do much of anything else. Most of my summer has been a write off.
.
Go to this website. Read what it has to say. Look for ticks when you come out of the bush. When you have a shower, ask your wife to check for ticks. You may think it's kind of silly or unnecessary, but all it takes is one.

I owe my life to the doctors and nurses here who pushed me through the system so quickly and to my Wendy who sorted out all the red tape for me and got the ball rolling. I also should thank Paul's wife for pointing me in the right direction. After eight weeks of being sick, she made me think of Lyme disease more seriously.
.
Don't get sick. Look for ticks.
