Forums are better suited for discussion on topic. I'm glad you realize this is not Facebook. I hope someday you will treat it like a forum. I'm not complaining though as I like to see how people think and act. I won't suggest you go out and dig instead of what you are doing here. That is your choice.

It's 10pm down here diggings time is over for today. Always a good time to do something positive for the hobby. I was on a main forum for ten months. Really got into the " permission " type threads. Took many arrows but was able to ,with the help of others, get the position of the majority of members on the forums to be one of "don't ask " rather than " always ask " in regards to public property that is legal to hunt. This is especially important for new people in the hobby that may have no problem hunting public property in their area that is not clearly stated as being restricted to metal detecting. Always best to let the authority see how someone is detecting if they are going to make a judgement call in their authority. By looking up laws for oneself rather than bringing the issue to someone that may give you a " no " because they have no idea what you are asking (how you will be detecting ) a person may retain their right to detect areas. This can also be better retained if people detect low key. Of course to accomplish stuff, such as this ,a person has to be patient and willing to do what they can under often difficult circumstances. If a person also interacts across the forum especially in the the off-topic or family friendly topics they can have a better relation with the people. I probably spent a larger part of my time there and had many threads with high participation and they were a lot of fun, which is what metal detecting is about too. I was also able to get a public commitment on Facebook, from a major manufacturer of detectors, that they will reevaluate their Easter hunt in public places where they advertised and encouraged participation from the general public to hunt for planted finds. Public places are constantly being restricted from detectorists that perform real hunts for various reasons. Those reasons can be as simple as being seen detecting as well as how someone looks detecting. Advertising and encouraging people to search public areas for planted finds, not knowing who would be looking for them is not something our hobby needs. I was able to get somebody to remove their youtube video where they were digging up the park with their kids with no respect for the park. A person commented on their video and posted a link to it on a public forum. The person that had the youtube video had no idea it was damaging to the hobby and said so and apologized on the video comments. The person that posted the link to the video on a forum as well as me commented on the video. He did not remove the video though until I posted a link to the forum where it was being discussed. He was not familiar with proper care of the park and he was not familiar with online forums. If he were familiar with either I doubt he would have been doing damage to the park or to the hobby by posting such a video on youtube. This is not a full list of things I feel I have done that are positive for the hobby while I was not out digging. Different people do different things for the hobby and some people do things that are damaging to the hobby.
