Eight years ago, in 2003, Dino from the UK visited us for the first time here in SA. We then spend one of the weekends at the sea side holiday resort of Hermanus and did some detecting with Lukas. The following was the front page then of our SA newsletter for metal detectorists, Treasure Talk. As today (Monday) is a public holiday in SA, our family took a long weekend and went camping at Onrus (a resort town next to Hermanus) As Saturday had an extreme low spring tide, I revisited the beach at Voelklip where we detected with Dino. That day we found quite a couple of items including a beautiful gold seal ring. This time however, I did not get a single beep! Then and now, the second picture was taken on Saturday morning at just before 8 ' I also visited Grotto Beach and Long beach but again, not a single beep. That must be a record for me – detecting three beaches at low tide (Spring tide) and not only finding nothing – I really did not get a single beep! (Yes, my machine was switched on!) Spot the white cliffs / rocks on the right of the following picture – it was here at Grotto beach that I found my first gold ring in 1997 with a Garret Freedom Ace detector. The following pictures were taken at our campsite – you can still see the Air Malaysia and airport stickers from last Sunday’s flight attached to my scoop! . BTW, a little bird told me that someone scored a gold hat trick at Fishhoek beach this weekend – pictures please!!

I really enjoyed your story and your memories. And in the end, aren't they our biggest treasures?
Thanks for sharing.
