Early this morning (it is now late summer here in South Africa), John, Andy and I left for Fish Hoek beach: It was here, about two weeks ago, that some rather nice gold rings were found by local beach detectorists. John (on the right kneeling) and Andy (left in wetsuit – his customary detecting gear) digging away upon arrival. Myself posing for a serene scene – it was truly a beautiful morning – not too hot or windy – just right for detecting. My only find of note – eyes only – was this little sand shark, an omen maybe for things to happen later the morning... We then packed up after only a few coins each, and left for Muizenberg beach about 5 kilometres to the north closer to Cape Town. These are the colourful private change rooms at the beach that looks empty from this side, but there were hundreds of surfers in the water. My first find was this Nokia Cell Phone: ET would not be able to phone home anymore on this one! Andy found this nice watch in the water – looks very expensive. Just as we were about to leave, a very loud siren went off with a helicopter hovering over the beach. Then just behind us, life guards came running out with these flags – it was a serious shark alert: These beaches are notorious for big white shark visits and a surfer was killed here last year. The next moment it looked like a Tsunami with surfers scrambling out of the water. As we sat watching, Andy nonchalantly passed this find over his shoulder – it was a nice gold ring that he had found minutes before the siren went off... It was a nice mornings detecting – but I would rather not venture in too deep into these waters! Pierre
