Anybody run This coil ? I'm on the fence about buying one as they are damn expensive and not sure about lack of depth .
Anyway looking for some input on this , lots of good things being said online but it could be people on the bandwagon .

I have one on order but before pulling the trigger, I did a lot of reading. There weren't many bad comments, the majority thought it was a sweet coil and it'd be their regular coil.

Hey (B.) Leafs
This is my honest opinion of that 5 X 8 coil for AT Pro. I used AT Pro a couple of times with the stock coil, dug some pretty deep holes, I liked the detector but was not "in love" with it. When I was on an old house site with lots of iron and nails, (or for that matter anywhere there are lots of targets) Target separation is no where near what Garrett claims, all I got was lots of noise, and very few targets dug. So I did get the 5X8 coil for mine.
1) you will loose about an inch of depth on coin sized objects, but don't let that worry you, it's still good for 8 or so inches with the small coil, and the benefits FAR outweigh the small decrease in depth.
2) the detector is substancially lighter with the smaller coil. Which is important to me. 3) Far better balanced, as a few have mentioned it being front heavy with stock coil. 4) Pinpointing is vastly improved. 5) target separation is about a thousand times better, which is probably my main reason for liking it. 6) Lastly, and quite important, it seems to be a quite a bit quieter, less background noise.
The AT Pro is sooo much better with the 5 X 8 I think that is what it should have came standard with, and the bigger (stock) coil should have been the optional coil.
If you read the forums much you will see more than a few who say that they use the smaller coil almost exclusively, and I agree, it's like night, and day. That said, I won't throw away my big coil, but would only use it where there are very few targets, or I want to cover a lot of unknown ground looking for the hot spot.
Hope that helps...some.

That's pretty convincing.. just wanted to double check what I have been reading wasn't just hype.
What kind of deal do you have on those with the coil protecter?

If you could email me through my site I'll tell you another story, or better yet refresh my memory with a phone number. I do remember you prefer email over phone, but I don't have that either...once my inbox gets over 200 I start deleting. Sorry. and if I could remember your last name I could look up an invoice, sadly that eludes me too. The coil 150.oo cover 15.oo and as always that is a total price (add no tax)

The thought of all those toasted pennies you'll be finding this spring should keep you warm! Hope mine and the ATP show up next week, fingers crossed. Might have to drive up to Rick's to fetch it rather than wait for the snail mail to deliver. Patience was never a virtue for me...

Well I have found through the years that the stock coil is always th best as the machines are configured for it. Found that different coils throw off the pinpointing, reading and such. Just go slower.

Just go slower. For the most part I do agree with that statement, that stock coil is best (at least 90 or more percent of the time)However as a generalized statement, it's important to note that that most detectors do come "stock" with an 8 inch coil, especially "through the years". AT Pro does not come stock with an 8 inch coil though. As I have actually used both I can tell you that the pin pointing is not thrown off, and the reading is not thrown off either. We'll take the lowly pull tab as an example which reads as 55 on the stock coil, it also reads as 55 on the 5 X 8 coil. I can guarantee if you tried it you would agree. I know as does everyone else you still prefer your old machines over the AT pro this may well be the reason why. I said earlier that I was not in love with it. I still like my Teknetics with it's 5 X 10 coil, because of decent coverage, and super separation, but AT Pro with it's 5 X 8 on is a VERY nice detector, which I do use.

Same here leafs. Some small compared to the stock coil. So far I've found every coin hidden under the rug, we'll see how it performs on the turf soon...

OK, so I can't post a full review on this coil as I JUST put it on my detector today. Seeing how the ground is frozen solid, probably will not get out to use it in the field for some time. I tested it inside and I have to say right away I agree with it balancing the machine better. MUCH easier to swing, and I can swing faster. I did not do a proper depth test between the two coils, but can certainly see a difference, but not much. This coil feels so much better and lighter. I also set up a couple tests with nails beside coins and it picked them out better than the stock. It will take some adjusting to my swinging with this smaller coil, but I really think I am going to like it. I can see this being killer in some trashy areas and in the water. I will of course post a better review once I actually get outside. I can see this being worth the money. I took a quick picture to show the size comparison. It's much smaller next to stock than I expected ,I knew the measurements going into the purchase, just puts it into perspective having them next to each other. Attachments:

It does seem Leafs that I did not steer you wrong, Your preliminary tests are pretty much in agreement with everything I've said....we will wait your final tests for the ultimate review. No pressure, No time limit.
