Curious if anybody here uses a GPS to find new locations with Google Maps? I am thinking about buying one myself. I think it would be handy for road trips as well. I don't want to spend a lot on one though. Worth getting one?

I don't want to spend a lot on one though. Worth getting one? Don't get me going! Used properly, they're worth their weight in gold. Coupled with Google Earth and some internet savvy, you have a very powerful tool at your disposal. Used incorrectly, you can end up cold, lost and dead. Not to mention they're as annoying to others as a cell phone when you're on a group outing. Buy the best you can afford, if you take care of it, it'll take care of you and last a long time. My old Garmin 3+ is soon due for replacement, but it's still going strong after more than 12 years of use. I'm using it to retrace old historic highways lost to time and development. It's an amazingly useful tool for MDing too; I just drop a waypoint (WP) on any point of interest (POI) and then upload them to my growing list of place to explore. Every time I'm out and about, if I see something of interest, I do it. Next time I'm in the area, I can just check for POIs and voila, I'm off and digging. If you do get one, I have tons of maps and software to get you going. Be careful of units on Kijiji, some of them are vastly overpriced. Like every electronic gadget, prices drop like a rock after purchase. GPS Central out west has great prices on new units. I was looking at the Garmin 62S, nice unit, great specs for $239 CAD. BTW, don't waste your time with programs for your smart phone. In theory they're better than a GPS, but unless you're carrying a car battery around with you to power it, you'll be DOA after a few hours. I use it for quick hit & runs, but other than that, they're fairly useless. I sent you a PM RE this. Cheers, DS
