Visit , respond and post on about 15 sites regularly. Have noticed though that it seems that the same hard core group is keeping many a forum active......time to participate folks and share your finds, views , photos and encouragement!

I think a lot of it has to do with the " Off Season Syndrome" Les ! I've recently started a Bear Hunting forum and I'm finding the same thing . There are guests showing up but very little input being made.
For me as a novice I enjoy it as a pastime but hope to get more active this season. Right now I'm enjoying doing a bit of research for areas of interest. For myself, I'm more interested in looking for relics and artifacts. There is such a rich history here in Lunenburg, dating back to the 1600's ... finding a thistle penny from 184? on my first swings in the back yard really blew me away.

Thanks Les ... I just don't think it appropriate to link a hunting site from your detecting forum , but I appreciate the gesture. This whole South Shore has got to be a treasure trove ... but shhhhh ! ... Let's just keep that to ourselves !

Have noticed though that it seems that the same hard core group is keeping many a forum active......time to participate folks and share your finds, views , photos and encouragement! The main reason participation is down is because there are other choices such as facebook groups and YouTube. Forums are like blogs and it comes down to the decision of the owner/administrator as to what is allowed on their site. If what a person posts is in line with the owners view of what should be allowed they will fit in. People have different views and opinions and when those become topic it takes moderation or babysitting to keep those under control. They can also be left to run. The moderators do not want to babysit/moderate or let threads run. Most people on detecting forums are interested in sharing finds and talking about hobby related issues that are not controversial. They can do that on facebook and control their own comments. No site is pushing for discussion of the things that are hurting the hobby although I think there is interest in that in the detecting community. Newer people coming to forums will go where the most traffic is. Those sites could gain participation if they would promote issues as much as they promote finds and equipment. They have no intention of doing that and never have. The same hard core group you are talking about are keeping the forums active for them but are not keeping them active so they can tackle the issues that are effecting the hobby. That is what a forum could do to offer something that is not available elsewhere and gain participation.

I've never really understood the whole facebook thing and I'm not a big fan of it. I could care less what you had for supper or what your kid did yesterday ! And don't even get me started on the whole gossip crap. The reason I prefer forums is , as you say Kemper, the sharing of a hobby with other so inclined; and that includes issues which may be considered controversial. I think people can have a frank, open conversation without resorting to disrespecting fellow forum members. Open debate can provide some innovative solutions.
I must be naive ... but what are these controversial issues you speak of? To me metal detecting is a hobby with pretty simple rules ... Federal and Provincial Parks and Historic sites are off limits , gain permission to detect, and respect other people's property by filling your holes and plugs. What am I missing that threatens the sport of detecting?
As we Canadians say ..." Sorry eh?"

As I said in another place:You must remember Leslie, that the core group on any forum are usually the retired, the unemployed and those with time on their hands - for whatever reason. Other, younger detectorists, are busy working, earning a crust, raising a family and coping with a myriad of other tasks, including getting on with their life. They don't have the same luxury as us ... and that is TIME. I have subscribed and been an administrator on detecting forums for longer than I care to remember and it has always been the same. Little to do with FB.

sodbuster. Public property is getting banned here in the U. S. because of the way people are detecting it whether they belong to a forum or not. Every situation is different and there are no simple rules. A person can go to the park ,loaded for bear with a group of friends or they can detect the park low key by themselves. That is just one example. We have very few rules or standards established and we don't even have a Code of Ethics as there are many different versions out and no one knows which is " the " Code. The younger generation and newcomers to the hobby seem to have time to join facebook groups and make Youtube videos. I think they would be on forums if other venues were not available.

As a 56 year old shift working Newbie, I actually find this an interesting topic. I guess the way I look at it ...it doesn't matter what the sport or activity there is always that small element of individuals with that " Do as I Please" mentality .. A Code of Ethics is meaningless, however to the other 98% of us who are conscience minded there are do's and don't that are, for all intents, just common sense.
Me...I'll just stick with the forum. I prefer the camaraderie, just having fun talking about what people have found, maybe learn a few tricks or even share a chuckle or two. Leave the drama for Facebook.

I think you are with the majority of people on forums. They are limited to what they want to see on a forum as opposed to what a forum could do for the hobby. Anyone can call their site a " Forum " but they are mainly a promotional site for the owner's views. Nothing wrong with " having fun talking about what people have found, maybe learn a few tricks or even share a chuckle or two. " as you put it. That can be done and should be done without being in opposition to what others want to do on a forum.

Every thing and everybody has the good bad or ugly. Big thing i find is that folks are too into whatthe value of what is found is the only bench mark for enjoying the hobby. personnally it's about getting out, breathing, my great digging buds and writing about the hunt adding either fun, a lesson or events. Some people crap on clad hunters but this hobby offers something for all . Just embrace the positive aspects.
