Well hiya everyone,
First let me say that the Nova Scotia detector community is quite a welcoming group. Here's my short story:
I was looking around on the net for info on detectors because I thought my son might enjoy this pasttime. The more I read, the more I became interested in the hobby myself. Problem was that there are so many opinions on this subject that I was absolutely confused on where to start with equipment. Having seen Leslie's name several times on various sites and noted that he too was in Sackville, I contacted him for info. Leslie, thanks for your help.
Being a gentleman, Leslie offered to take my son and I on a little outing to give it a try and to test drive a couple of machines. Unfortunately, Leslie was unable to make it; but Navy Davey picked up the slack and took Leslie's place. Didn't make our million but we found a few coins and had a good time. Thanks Dave.
Since then, I talked to Slickpick Rick and picked his brain (thanks Rick). I'm getting closer to choosing our equipment. I've settled on the Tesoro brand as our first toys. I really like the light weight, simplicity and lifetime warranty. I'm thinking the Compadre for my son but I am unsure what to get for me. In the running are the Vaquero and Tejon, mostly because these are the models that have manual ground balancing (although, truth be known I'm not sure that this is a necessary feature. I read several times that this is a good option when scouring salt beaches.)
Any thoughts/opinions/experiences would be welcome.
Thanks very much and I look forward to getting involved in this very interesting hobby/obsession,
JohnnyM
